Hi all,

I'm gonna be off to the US soon and was thinking of getting a PS3 from there. My question is will the US version PS3 work over here in the UK?

I would caution against buying a PS3 from the States for a number of reasons:

1) BluRay titles, unlike HD DVD, are going to be region coded and so you will be unable to play UK/European (R2) disks on a BD-R1 player.

2) The unit will (probably) only play NTSC and therefore you may be 'limited' to US games and certainly only US DVDs.

3) Connectivity of the US unit is unknown. Obviously consoles use standard connections for TV but what about Ethernet connections? WiFi? etc etc Are US standards all going to be compatible in the UK?

4) What if the unit fails - as many early PS2s and Xbox 360s have done - where will you stand to get a replacement? Do you travel to/from the US much?

5) Have you got a stepdown transformer? Not a big issue as you can pick them up for £15-odd but are you content to have one running all the time?

6) How about other 'unknown' issues - Any compatibility issues for online gaming? Will a US player work with a UK PSP? Will a US PS3 work with the UK download service? etc etc

Honestly not trying to be a kil**oy - merely pointing out there may be issues with buying a US model.

To answer some of Aces points

1) You will only be able to play US Blueray Films

2) PS3 Games are all region free and any game will run on any system regardless of region

3) Connectivity is identical for all models

4) PS3's have the lowest ever failier rate of any console ever produced

5) Stepdown converter would not be needed as it will accept 110/240v

6) no issues with online gaming or networks i have my unit setup both on the UK and US which is great as US network has more downloadable content
